FAQs

Do I need to have snow chains in the car if I drive to Tignes?

Yes! During snowy weather the resort restricts access to vehicles with ‘équipements speciaux’, i.e. snow tyres or chains. Often traffic police will not allow any vehicle onto the roads without the driver pulling over and fitting appropriate chains. Chains can be bought at any of the garages in the area or can be requested as part of a car hire package when you rent the car. It is worth practising how to fit chains before you really need them, which is usually in a blizzard in the dark! They are often tricky to put on but if you can do it quickly you will find it much easier - before your fingers start to freeze from the cold. Remember to put them on at the first sign of snow covering the road, using the parking areas or slip roads provided, and to take them off when you are on tacmac. This will to prevent a traffic jam behind you and prevent a blow-out. You must drive slowly with chains on as they only help to prevent sliding and skidding, and can snap under too much strain. Broken chains can flail and easily remove parts of the vehicle which can not only be a hazard but also costly. Please be aware that snow chains will not be effective on ice.
